Still Upset Over the 2020 Plan that Never Happened

When I joined Kappa Alpha Theta at the University of Louisville, I honestly didn’t mind that we didn’t have a house or a suite like the other Greek organizations. Zeta Tau Alpha had been established on campus a few years earlier and already had a meeting location. Granted, it wasn’t anywhere near Greek row, but at least it was a place to get together in between classes. When I joined I thought we’d have a meeting location within the year, or at least 2. I got especially excited when I heard rumors about Uofl tearing down the old dorms right next to Greek row and expanding for the organizations that didn’t have houses or suites. As you can see, that never happened.

Instead of expanding Greek row and providing houses for many Greek organizations, Uofl decided to build an apartment complex (because the 6 that we had aren’t enough already). Within just the past 2 years, 4 new apartment complexes have been added to Uofl’s campus: The Retreat, The Clubhouse, The Nine and University Pointe.

Why do we need 8 apartment complexes? Uofl passed up the perfect opportunity to expand Greek row. Uofl houses over 32 Greek organizations and continues to add groups to the community. But what Uofl has failed to do is provide housing for these added organizations. NPHC alone is made up of 9 organizations, and only has one suite. Two of the sororities and several Fraternities are still left without houses near Greek Row. Delta Gamma sorority was suppose to come to campus, but it is rumored they delayed coming because lack of housing.

Uofl is behind in the number of Greek organizations on its campus. The University of Kentucky has 49 and Indiana University has 74. All the larger Universities have a huge Greek presence, with beautiful Greek housing. The houses at the University of Louisville house 5 sisters at best. The houses at the University of Kentucky have an average of over 30 bedrooms in each house.

The number of Greeks on campus is growing each year. More organizations want to come to Uofl but it won’t happen if Uofl does not start adding housing for these organizations that contribute so much to the University.
